Sides are just as important as the main portion of the plate. They add color, and goodness, and, sometimes just need to be there. So, sometimes fries just have to be on the side. But, I’m more conscious about what I eat now. I want fries, I just want them a little healthier. So if I’m going to eat fries, baked oven fries are definitely the way to go

We all grew up on french fries. Delicious, greasy finger food that is iconic. But, now we’re starting to think a little healthier, be a little more conscious about what we eat. The reality is fried food is bad for you, well, if you eat it all the time. I’ve said moderation is the key. But, you don’t go the the Golden Arches just to buy fries, you go for the whole meal, and it tastes so good. But we need to move towards a healthier diet. Less processed foods. However it requires some work on our side.

The potato, or spud, can trace its roots back to Chile and Peru. It’s has been cultivated there for thousands years. However, as people moved around and shared their foods with others the potato found itself moving into North America, and in the 1600’s over to Europe. It’s a member of the deadly nightshade family and the flowers and leaves can be poisonous, but the tubers (the correct name for the potato itself) are obviously not.

Potatoes contain about 25% of your daily vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Interestingly enough, those numbers are reduced when the potato is baked. Potatoes also have a high GI (glycemic index), so if you’re on a diet you have to watch your intake. As with most things, moderation is the key

It is an extremely versatile vegetable, that can be cooked in so many ways. Boiled, baked, fried, sautéed, skin on, skin off, the list is practically endless. And so many toppings, cheese, chili, gravy, or, cheese and gravy, I’m thinking that Canadian classic Poutine. And everyone has their own favorite. I usually leave the skin on, but if you don’t like, feel free to peel it. However, take into consideration that the skins are actually good for you. The skin contains nutrients and is high in fiber, which is good for your digestive tract, something to bear in mind.

So, baked oven fries are extremely easy. Russet potatoes, some garlic powder, salt and pepper. 1 Russet potato will make enough fries for two servings. Bake in the oven, and that’s it. As usual, you have choices, fat or skinny fries. Some of you may have a French fry cutter, I don’t, I’m old school. So you can do standard fries, or bar fries or potato wedges, it’s really your choice. The thicker fries will take a little longer to cook. Cut them the way that you like, rinse, pat dry with a paper towel and toss in a bowl with oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder, spread on a sheet evenly and bake in the oven for about 45 mins at 425. Turn after about 20 minutes. That’s it, oven baked fries, ready to serve. Enjoy and thank you
