We love our dogs, they’re part of the family. I write a food blog and have two dogs in the house. So, let me combine the two things that mean a lot to me. Chicken and rice doggie snacks sounds like a delicious solution

Making dog snacks, or any pet friendly food is a little different from what I usually do. No processed food, no spices, it has to be healthy and natural. I think if I use foods that are ok for human consumption, I think the doggies will be fine.

What’s in them

The ingredients for this particular doggie snack is stuff I already have in my kitchen. You probably do too. Plain chicken breast. Remember, no spices, just plain chicken breast. So, I take a cue from my broth v’s stock post and boil the chicken breast in water with some vegetables . That will provide both the meat and broth.

So, a half a chicken breast in a small pot with half a carrot, half a celery stick, and a pinch of salt, cover with water. If you read the post, the 3:2:1 ratio is ideal. 3 parts liquid to 2 parts meat to 1 part vegetables. Bring to a boil, lower to simmer and cook for about 1/2 hour. Set aside and allow to cool. Meanwhile we need half a cup of cooked rice. Using a 2:1 ratio, bring 1cup water to a boil, add 1/2 cup of rinsed rice. If I rinse it for me, I rinse for them, read this. Lower heat, cover, come back in 45 mins, set aside and allow to cool.

How to make them

Now we can start to assemble the doggie biscuits. So, we need the 6oz cooked chicken breast, the half a carrot and half a stick of celery. 1 cup of the cooked rice and 1/2 cup of the stock from cooking the chicken. And 2 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour. Ok, yes, whole-wheat, it has more nutrients, and fiber, so it’s better for them than regular all purpose flour. Now, if you don’t have whole-wheat flour in the house, you can use regular or all purpose flour. You should probably be aware of allergies, but if there’s been no reaction to their regular food, you’re probably ok. And 1 tablespoon flax meal, it’s good for their coats.

Put the chicken, vegetables, rice and chicken stock in a food processor. Pulse a bit to break up, then run for long enough to make a paste. Meanwhile, in a bowl, put the flour, egg and flax meal. Now, mix everything together. There’s a little work involved in this part. But mix till all the flour is mixed in and a dough is formed. Then you can take it out of the bowl, continue to knead, and fold to mix. Once the dough is evenly mixed, get a rolling pin and roll out to about 1/2 thick.

Ok, now you have a sheet of doggie snack dough, now you get to use the doggie bone shaped cookie cutter you bought. Oh, you didn’t? Well neither did I the first time I made doggie snacks. So, if you did, punch out as many as you can, knead, roll and punch out more, till you’re done. I’d you don’t have a cutter, just cut into 1”x 2” rectangles, about the size of a biscuit.

Now take all the snacks and lay them out on parchment paper on a baking sheet. Put in a preheated 400 degree oven for about 40 mins, or till they have a golden brown color. Allow to cool, and that’s it. Homemade chicken and brown rice doggie snacks. Thank you, and the doggies will too. Store them in a sealed container, good for a couple of weeks, but won’t last that long
